Mobile Home Moving Equipment: What the Pros Use | Superior MH Setup

Mobile Home Moving Equipment: Toter trucks, transport axles, hydraulic jacks & more. From the pros at Superior MH Setup.
In this article, we’ll walk through the main types of mobile home moving equipment that professional transport companies use and explain what each piece does in the moving process.

If you’ve ever seen a manufactured home being transported down the highway, you’ve probably wondered about the specialized equipment involved. Moving a structure that weighs 40,000 to 80,000 pounds and stretches up to 90 feet long requires purpose-built machinery that you won’t find at your local equipment rental shop.

Toter Trucks

The toter truck (also called a mobile home toter) is the primary vehicle that pulls the manufactured home down the road. Unlike a standard semi-truck, toters are specifically designed for mobile home transport. They’re shorter than typical truck tractors, which gives the driver better visibility and maneuverability — critical when pulling a load that can be 16 feet wide and 90 feet long.

Toters typically have heavy-duty engines in the 300-400 horsepower range, reinforced frames, and specialized hitching systems designed for the unique connection points on manufactured home frames. Most professional mobile home movers own their toters rather than renting standard trucks, because the specialized configuration makes a significant difference in safety and efficiency.

Transport Axles and Running Gear

Manufactured homes are built on a steel I-beam frame with permanent attachment points for transport axles. When it’s time to move, the transport crew installs axle assemblies under the frame at specific points. These axles include heavy-duty tires, suspension components, and braking systems rated for the home’s weight.

Some older homes still have their original transport axles (called running gear) installed from the factory. If these are in good condition, they can be reused. However, many homes have had their original running gear removed after initial installation, requiring a fresh set of transport axles for any subsequent move.

Hydraulic Jacks and Lifting Equipment

Hydraulic bottle jacks are essential for almost every step of the moving process. They’re used to lift the home off its piers and blocks before installing transport axles, to make fine height adjustments during the process, and to lower the home onto its new foundation at the destination. Professional movers use multiple jacks simultaneously, carefully coordinating the lift to avoid twisting or stressing the frame.

Dollies and Steer Axles

For double-wide homes and longer single-wides, a steerable dolly or steer axle is attached at the rear of the home. This allows the back end of the home to be steered independently from the toter truck, which is essential for navigating turns, curves, and tight access roads. Without rear steering, the back end of a 70+ foot load would swing dangerously wide on turns.

Escort Vehicles and Safety Equipment

Georgia law requires escort vehicles (pilot cars) for oversize loads including manufactured homes. These vehicles drive ahead of and behind the transport, warning other motorists and helping navigate through intersections. They’re equipped with oversized load signs, flags, flashing lights, and two-way radios for communication with the toter driver.

The transport itself also carries required safety equipment: reflective triangles, oversized load banners, red flags on the widest points of the home, and lighting visible from all directions.

Why Equipment Matters

The quality and condition of mobile home moving equipment directly affects the safety of the move and the condition of your home when it arrives. Worn tires, poorly maintained brakes, or inadequate jacking equipment can lead to road incidents, frame damage, or structural stress that shows up as cracks and alignment problems after installation.

When choosing a mobile home transport company, ask about their equipment. A professional operation maintains their own fleet of toters, axles, and jacks — not borrowing or renting general-purpose equipment for each job.
